Haltwhistle firm's products selling like hot cakes
A traditional Northumberland bakery has revealed it is still pulling in the 'dough' despite the recession.
Border Homebake, based at Hadrian Enterprise Park, Haltwhistle, has enjoyed its best year of trading in its 18-year history, and is anticipating even better performance during 2009.
The small bakery, which specialises in traditional tray bakes, was started by farmer's wife Justine Carruthers, 37, in an old, redundant dairy building.
It took off last year when she participated for the first time in a speciality food show in North Yorkshire, and for twelve Morrisons' superstores across the North East.
Justine, who uses traditional methods passed down by her by her grandmother and an old family friend, said: "Despite all the problems of the recession there is still a terrific demand for our home baked products and we are working flat out to keep up with the demand."
The company markets her products under the Tray Bakes brand and sells them, individually wrapped, in retail packs or in larger trays for catering outlets.
Among the best sellers are honeycomb crunch, a sweet meal honeycombed biscuit with a drizzle of white chocolate-flavoured coating. Other popular varieties are luxury caramel shortcake and caramel crispie.
The business delivers to customers in the North East, Cumbria, including the Lake District, Yorkshire, as far south as London and to Aberdeen in the North.

My son recently bought Honey Comb Crunch at The Pantry on Front Street in Northumberland. We have all enjoyed it so much and wondered
whether or not it is possible to obtain more of it in Chicago, IL USA?
