Romans to rule Hadrian's Wall again
For the first time in more than 1,500 years a complete century of Roman soldiers will garrison Hadrian's Wall.
The century, comprising 80 men, will be recruited from across Europe to mirror the cosmopolitan nature of the original Wall garrisons.
They will be based at Corbridge Roman site but will visit several other locations.
More than 500 historical re-enactors will take part in the Living Frontier project between May 26-31 along the length of the Wall.
They will be led by top Roman re-enactment group the Erskine Guard.
Participants will also reflect the long history of Hadrian's Wall country, and will include Viking, Civil War and Border Reivers groups. One group will re-create the sounds and smells of Roman times at Housesteads fort, near Bardon Mill.
The events are being led by Hexham-based Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd and form part of the North East's programme of festivals and events developed by culture10.
"It will bring the Wall to life again and we hope it will encourage people to enjoy its heritage and landscape," said Tom Higgins, director of communications at Hadrian's Wall Heritage.
The highlight of The Living Frontier events will be a 90-minute pageant at Tynedale Rugby Ground in Corbridge on May 30 at 8pm which will bring together all the re-enactors and their frontier stories.
On May 28 a march of Romans and other re-enactors on Carlisle Castle will launch the Carlisle Historic Quarter Partnership, which has been formed to make the most of the city's heritage offerings.
At the same time a legion of re-enactors will march on the Castle Keep in Newcastle.
Other events will include a living history camp involving Border Reivers at Birdoswald, the Sealed Knot Civil War group in Carlisle Castle and at an encampment at Vindolanda which recreates Roman military and civilian life.
Chesters fort, once a cavalry base, will provide displays of equestrian skills while Segedunum and Arbeia forts on Tyneside will have Viking displays.
