Halton Lea Gate mine campaigners call on firm to abandon bid
Families in a rural hamlet are calling on a development company to abandon its bid for an opencast mine in the Northumberland countryside after planners firmly rejected the controversial scheme.
Campaigners in tiny Halton Lea Gate near Haltwhistle say they are "overjoyed" after county councillors voted unanimously to refuse permission to dig 140,000 tonnes of coal from a 75-acre site, within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
They urged applicant HM Project Developments to "get the message", admit defeat and not launch an appeal against the decision.
HM Project Developments' agent, Newcastle-based firm Blackett, Hart and Pratt, did not comment.

thank goodness no planning permission for the coal mine at halton lea gate. and i hope the company get to realise that they are not wanted and accept the result.
I think this is an opportunity missed for Halton Lea Gate. Employment opportunities in the area are limited enough. The open cast mine would have brought much needed employment. Local services have dwindled over the years with the loss of the local shop and demand for public transport. The mine would have brought much needed demand for all public services. The land to be developed is low quality land which already bares the scars of a former mining era. The land is unstable in places. The mining proposal would have improved the land for both agriculture and local wildlife.
Oh well, if the retirees who forced this decision are happy then good for them. People in Halton Lea gate who are currently on benefits can continue to do so or other will travel many many miles for work thanks to their neighbours who oppose any development in the area that would benefit the local economy. Grey power rules!!
Thank god the council refused planning permission, NO locals would have got jobs if the planning was granted, and health should come be wealth.
The community clearly did not want this and showed it, only a few people would have benefitted and many would have suffered..
Now lets hope HM Project Developments get the message "You are not wanted here"
It wasn't only the people of Halton Lea Gate who objected but people also from other villages and far and wide...
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY !!! Hip Hip Hooray !!! Yeehaw !!!
